LG Chem Ltd., South Korea's leading chemical firm, said Thursday it has obtained a deal to supply devices for desalinating water to Morocco. Under the deal, LG Chem will supply some 18,000 reserve osmosis (RO) membranes to an industrial complex in Morocco by May. The contracted RO membranes will be used to desalinate 90 million tons of sea water, or 246,000 tons a day, annually at the Jorf Lasfar industrial complex operated by Moroccan phosphate giant OCP Group for use by up to 1.9 million people in Morocco, the company said in a statement. The Jorf Lasfar complex produces 4 million tons of phosphate and more than 10 million tons of fertilizers a year. Desalinated water is required for the production of fertilizers, and for 1.5 million people residing in Safi and El Jadida near the complex, it said. Source: Yonhap News Agency
