An event to announce Asia's 50 best restaurants will kick off in Seoul this weekend for a five-day run for the first time thanks to the popularity of "K-food" around the world, officials said Thursday. The Asia's 50 Best Restaurants (A50B) will be held from Saturday to Wednesday, bringing together over 800 world-renowned chefs, gourmets and critics, according to the Seoul city government and the agriculture ministry. A50B is one of the world's distinguished rating guides for restaurants, along with the Michelin Guide. Launched in 2013, it has been held in major tourist cities around Asia, including Singapore and Bangkok. Seoul was chosen this year as its 12th destination. A list of the top 50 restaurants in Asia will be announced at the awards ceremony at the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas in southern Seoul on Tuesday. Participants will also be taking part in banquets and forums to be held at hotels around Seoul, including at Shilla Hotel, and Four Seasons Hotel in the Jung-gu district. The Seoul ci ty government and the agriculture ministry plan to promote the gastronomy of Seoul by showcasing fine dining dishes using Korean ingredients made by chefs chosen in the top 100 list of the Taste of Seoul festival last year. It will also run a Korean food workshop under the theme of temple food and fermentation culture, officials said. Earlier, five Korean restaurants placed in the 51-100th rank this year, including Eatanic Garden at 62nd place and Born and Bred placing 64th place. "The city will build on this event as a stepping stone to foster various programs that will help distinguish Seoul as the city of gastronomy to captivate foreigners," a city official said.
