Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen, President of the Senate of Cambodia, this morning made a clarification over the schedule for the launch of Funan Techo Canal project, stressing that it is the right of the Prime Minister.
“These days, it has been said that I decided to launch the construction of Funan Techo canal on June 12, 2024. There is no such thing at all. The decision when to break ground for the construction is the exclusive right of Prime Minister Hun Manet,’ he wrote on his official Facebook page.
“Only on social media can the fire be extinguished without worrying about the smoke,” the senate president underlined.
On May 16, Samdech Techo Hun Sen suggested the 7th-mandate Royal Government of Cambodia breaks ground for the construction of Funan Techo Canal as soon as possible as it has many benefits ranging from time consuming for travel and transport to useful irrigation system, flood prevention, better livelihoods of local people, and tourism promotion in the country’s southwestern regi
on.
According to the project’s feasibility study, the US$1.7 billion Funan Techo Canal project is 180 kilometres long and 100 metres wide upstream and 80 metres downstream with two navigation lanes. The construction would take around four years to complete.
The canal will link Prek Takeo of Mekong River to the sea in Kep province crossing four provinces: Kandal, Takeo, Kampot and Kep with a total of 1.6 million people living on either side of the waterway.
