Labor union lodges complaint against POSCO for allegedly prodding workers to quit union

A labor union at steelmaking giant POSCO filed a labor complaint Monday, accusing the company of prodding unionized employees to quit the labor union, union officials said Monday.

The complaint was filed with the labor ministry by the POSCO labor union affiliated with the Federation of Korean Trade Unions after some 120 cases of employees pressed to withdraw their union membership were reported to the union.

The union’s membership has shrunk from some 12,000 reported last year to 8,800 recently.

The union accused POSCO of prodding workers to leave the union by threatening performance assessments and vowed a stern response to what it called a violation of workers’ constitutional rights to organize.

Kim Seong-ho, chairperson of the union, said that “Starting with this complaint filing, the union will root out POSCO’s illegal (labor) acts.”

POSCO denied having coerced workers, saying joining or leaving a labor union is a matter of individuals’ free choice and decision.
