Kia Corp., South Korea's second-largest automaker, said Monday its monthly sales slipped 4.6 percent on-year in February over the reduced number of working days last month and a delayed announcement in the government's electric vehicle (EV) subsidy scheme. Kia sold 242,656 vehicles in February, down from 254,405 units a year ago, the company said in a statement. Domestic sales fell 12 percent on-year to 44,008 units last month, and exports also declined 2.8 percent to 198,348 during the cited period. The overall decline was attributed to the reduced number of working days due to the Lunar New Year holiday in February, as well as a base effect from a year ago, when Kia saw a 26.9 percent on-year domestic sales boost. The company also cited the delay in confirmation of subsidies for EVs compared to the previous year. Kia's Sorento SUV was the best-selling model at home, shipping 8,671 units while its Sportage SUV was the most popular model overseas, selling 40,652 units, the company said.
