The state-run Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power (KHNP) said Monday it has inked an agreement with Canada's Candu Energy Inc. to speed up the preparations to vie for a refurbishment project for a Romanian reactor. The KHNP signed the infrastructure engineering services contract with Candu in line with their goal to participate in the retubing and refurbishment project of the Cernavoda Unit 1 Nuclear Power Plant in Romania. The project centers on replacing key components and building infrastructure for an additional 30 years of operation. Under the partnership with Candu, the KHNP will prepare an engineering plan for the infrastructure construction. "Through this contract, we look forward to more strengthened cooperation between South Korea and Romania in the field of nuclear energy," Whang Joo-ho, the CEO of KHNP, said, noting the company will focus efforts on winning the contract this year. The KHNP signed a tripartite consortium agreement with Candu Energy and Italy's Ansaldo Nucleare S.p.A. for the proje ct last year. Source: Yonhap News Agency
