KELANTANESE RESIDENTS REVIVE TRADITIONAL COMMUNAL BREAKING FAST EVENT

KOTA BHARU, Residents at Taman Paduka Kubang Kerian here have decided to revive a popular 70s tradition by holding breaking fast communally together.

Nik Norgilan Ismail, 52, who coordinated the event, said that around 80 residents worked together since early morning to prepare a traditional menu that included nasi kerabu tumis, various traditional kuih such as tepung pelita, kuih sira nekbat, pindang tapai ubi kayu and puteri mandi.

“This initiative is a result of the sharing of ideas between residents who came together, some with donations, others with an assortment of old plates, dishes and trays to invoke the 1970s nostalgia.

“We do this in hopes that the younger generation will carry this on and we believe that they rarely are able to experience such a unique way of breaking fast,’ he told reporters here today.

Nik Norgilan, who is a teacher, got most of the women to wear baju kurung kedah, while the men adorned themselves with semutar kain batik lepas, a Kelantanese traditional headgear.

Norgilan
said such a communal way of breaking fast was rare these days and it was exciting for those who participated, especially youth, who took the opportunity to prepare various dishes.

“Even though we are located right smack in the middle of the town, we want to retain the kampung and traditional atmosphere,’ he added.

Resident Mohd Zawawi Mat Nor, 29, said even though times have changed, traditional menus and practices needed to be preserved and passed on to the next generation.

In addition, neighbours and residents would grow closer and foster better ties through the communal activity they organised together, he said.
