Emart24 to sell ‘bitcoin meal box’

Emart24, a South Korean convenience store chain, said Thursday it has partnered with local cryptocurrency exchange Bithumb to sell the “bitcoin meal box” by the end of this month.

Under a partnership with Bithumb, Emart24 plans to sell 30,000 such meal boxes at 5,900 won (US$4.3) per product by May 31, the company said in a statement.

“Customers can receive 10,000 won worth of bitcoin if they enter the Bithumb app and input the number of a coupon in the meal box. An additional 20,000 won (worth of) bitcoin will be given if they generate a NH Nonghyup bank account for bitcoin transactions,” a company spokesperson said over the phone.

Those who already have a NH bank account are required to connect their accounts to the Bithumb exchange to get the additional bitcoin, she said.

Emart24 is an affiliate of Shinsegae Group, which operates department stores, large discount store chains and other retail businesses.
