YouTube channel ordered to pay 10 mln won in compensation to first lady for airing her phone calls

SEOUL, - A Seoul court on Thursday ordered a liberal YouTube news channel to pay 10 million won (US$7,539) in compensation to first lady Kim Keon Hee for broadcasting recordings of her phone conversations.

In the run-up to last year's presidential election, the channel Voice of Seoul and the broadcasting network MBC aired recordings of phone conversations Kim had with a Voice of Seoul reporter after a court rejected Kim's injunction to stop the broadcast.

The recordings, running some seven hours in total, contained criticism of the previous Moon Jae-in government and remarks on some politically sensitive issues.

Claiming violations of her privacy and honor, Kim has since filed a suit against the reporter and the head of the channel, demanding 100 million won in compensation.

An appellate bench of the Seoul Central District Court ruled that the defendants should pay 10 million won in damages to Kim, upholding a lower court's decision made in February.
