Timor-Leste President Praises Cambodia’s Support for ASEAN Membership

Dili: President Jos© Ramos-Horta of Timor-Leste praised Cambodia as a “good and great friend” during a meeting with Cambodian Senate President Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen in Dili on May 8.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, President Ramos-Horta expressed gratitude for Cambodia’s support, particularly acknowledging Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s efforts in securing Timor-Leste’s ASEAN observer status in 2022, during Cambodia’s ASEAN chairmanship. The president emphasized the significance of Cambodia’s role, highlighting the honour and pride felt by the Timorese people and government.

President Ramos-Horta warmly welcomed Samdech Techo Hun Sen and his delegation, commending the Cambodian leader as “the most influential figure in Southeast Asia.” He also reiterated his hope for Timor-Leste’s swift accession to full ASEAN membership, signaling a desire for deeper integration within the regional bloc.

Samdech Techo Hun Sen, recalling his 2016 visit to Timor-Leste, expressed gratitude for the country’s continued hospitality. He conveyed well wishes from the King of Cambodia and emphasized his commitment to strengthening bilateral ties. As a legislative leader, he reaffirmed Cambodia’s support for Timor-Leste’s bid for ASEAN membership, underlining the importance of regional cooperation.

In addition to bilateral discussions, the two leaders addressed regional and global issues of mutual interest. Samdech Hun Sen extended an invitation from the Cambodian King for President Ramos-Horta to revisit Cambodia, emphasizing the ongoing friendship and collaboration between the two nations.
