SUNWAY PYRAMID ICE CELEBRATES WORLD ICE SKATING DAY WITH FREE ADMISSION FOR YOUTHS

KUALA LUMPUR, In celebration of World Ice Skating Day, which falls on the first Sunday of December, Sunway Pyramid Ice welcomed over 200 children and young teenagers to skate for free to uncover and nurture budding talents in ice skating.

In a statement today, Sunway Pyramid Ice said 120 students and coaches performed on ice and the 200 youths skated for free throughout two whole sessions, for a total of 90 minutes.

In the spirit of Christmas joy, 35 children from Home For the Children by Rumah Charis and Angels Children’s Home joined in for the fun activities, lunch, a visit from Santa Claus and a gifting session.

Sunway Pyramid Ice assistant general manager Albert Cheok said this was the first time an ice-skating rink in Malaysia is commemorating the occasion and approximately 50 countries participated in the initiative this year, each organising a variety of events to celebrate the day.

“Although World Ice Skating Day is only in its second edition this year, it is a milestone for ice skaters to have a day of recognition, to rekindle their spirit of play and sport.

“The main objective is to make ice skating sport accessible to everyone in a fun and safe environment, including first-timers, amateurs, and professionals,” he was quoted as saying in the statement.

According to the statement, this initiative also responds to the call from the Ministry of Youth and Sports for malls to promote youth and sports-related activities.

Furthermore, in support of the Rakan Muda initiative, a hundred lucky children walked away with complimentary skating lessons from the Sunway Pyramid Ice Skating Academy.

Meanwhile, Skate Malaysia Competition Director and President of the Skating Institute Asia, Harry Janto Leo said the celebration is a great chance to help our youth enrich quality time spent with sport.

“We made the rink free for a day to inspire young children and teenagers, who could be aspiring athletes.

“It is also a wonderful opportunity to practise our commitment to fostering the unique sport of ice skating in Malaysia,” he said.
