Phnom Penh: The Justice Ministry's spokesperson has urged journalists to adhere to ethical and professional reporting standards to protect themselves from potential legal consequences as outlined in Cambodia's Press Law. According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, H.E. Chin Malin, who serves as the Permanent Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice, emphasized the importance of ethical journalism during a statement made on December 3. He reiterated that while press freedom is guaranteed and protected by law for journalists who adhere to media ethics, the rule of law will be enforced against those who violate the rights of others through unethical practices. Chin Malin cited examples such as defamation, insults, misinformation, and the dissemination of fake news as actions that breach legal boundaries, potentially leading to legal repercussions. He also assured that the Ministry of Justice is prepared to offer legal support to journalists who face wrongful charges and arrests due to their ethical and professi onal reporting. He further explained that in a society governed by the rule of law, an individual's exercise of rights and freedoms must be balanced with the rights of others, underscoring the necessity for ethical standards in journalism.
