The chiefs of South Korean diplomatic missions in the Red Sea region will meet next week to discuss ways to enhance maritime security amid escalating tensions in the major shipping route, the foreign ministry said Thursday. A senior ministry official is scheduled to fly to a country in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden to preside over a meeting with the top South Korean diplomats in the region, the ministry said, without elaborating. The upcoming meeting comes amid growing calls for safety measures for Korean ships and export goods as the Iran-backed Houthi rebels have been attacking commercial ships in the Red Sea since the war between Israel and Hamas started.
