Nuclear envoys of S. Korea, China discuss N. Korea in Switzerland

The top nuclear envoys of South Korea and China discussed the security situation surrounding North Korea as they attended a roundtable in Switzerland, the foreign ministry said Thursday.

Their bilateral talks came on the sidelines of the 10th Zermatt Roundtable on Security Issues in Northeast Asia, held from Monday to Wednesday, according to the ministry.

On Tuesday, Lee Jun-il and his Chinese counterpart, Liu Xiaoming, Beijing’s special representative on Korean Peninsula affairs, exchanged their views on the current security situation on the Korean Peninsula.

During his keynote speech at the roundtable, Lee stressed that the responsibility for the current tensions on the Korean Peninsula lies in North Korea.

He also noted South Korea’s efforts to “create a strategic environment” for the North to return to denuclearization talks.

Lee is currently serving as South Korea’s chief nuclear negotiator after its top nuclear envoy, Kim Gunn, recently resigned to join the ruling People Power Party ahead of the Ap
ril general elections.
