A group of non-mainstream lawmakers of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) warned Tuesday they will leave the party this week unless party leader Lee Jae-myung accepts their reform demands.
Rep. Cho Eung-cheon, one of the four members of an anti-Lee group called Principle and Common Sense, made the remark in a radio interview, saying the group will announce their departures if Lee does not respond to their calls for change by Wednesday.
“Chairman Lee has only one day left,” he said. “If we don’t get an answer, it will leave us with no other choice.”
Cho and the three other lawmakers of the group have requested Lee step down as party leader and the DP distance itself from hard-core Lee supporters.
Cho also left open the possibility of joining hands with newly burgeoning political parties, such as the one envisioned by Lee Nak-yon, a former DP leader, or Lee Jun-seok, a former leader of the ruling People Power Party.
He said a “big tent” created by those who are not affiliated with either of the two
major rival parties could offer more choices for voters in upcoming elections.
