The National Assembly (NA) will discuss and approve the draft law on amendments to the Election Law in a session on Thursday this week, said Prime Minister Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo Hun Sen.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of a meeting to review the activities and outcomes of the sixth-mandate Royal Government’s Working Groups for the capital and provinces held here at the Peace Palace this afternoon, Samdech Techo Hun Sen said Samdech Krolahom Sar Kheng, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior and H.E. Koeut Rith, Minister of Justice, will represent the Royal Government to defend this draft law at the NA Palace on June 23.
When the law comes into force, all competent officials will have duties to take action to defend the whole process of the National Election, he added.
“We cannot tolerate anyone who destroys the election and democracy in Cambodia,” the Premier underlined.
The Draft Law on Amendments to Election Law was submitted to the National Assembly on June 15, 2023. It is designed to ensure that the elections are conducted without interruption by anyone.
According to Samdech Techo Hun Sen’s explanation, anyone who violates the law will be fined from KHR 5 to 20 million (over US$1,200 to nearly US$5,000), not including other criminal charges.
The amendments to the election law were made in order to tighten the election rights by strengthening and enhancing the responsibility of political leaders at both the national and sub-national levels.
