Lions outfielder Koo Ja-wook voted KBO’s top player for season’s final month

Samsung Lions outfielder Koo Ja-wook has been voted the top player in South Korean baseball for the final month of the regular season. The Korea Baseball Organization (KBO) announced Friday that Koo beat out seven candidates for the Player of the Month award for the September-October period. The regular season concluded Oct. 1. For that period, Koo led the KBO with a .500 batting average, nine homers, 24 RBIs, a .559 on-base percentage and a 1.017 slugging percentage. This was Koo's first monthly honor of his 10-year career. Koo was the runaway winner after collecting 29 of 30 votes cast by media, and 221,373 out of 395,194 votes cast by fans online. Those totals translated to 76.34 voting points, more than 70 points ahead of the runner-up, LG Twins outfielder Hong Chang-ki. With Koo mashing at the plate, the Lions posted the second-best record in the regular season at 78-64-2 (wins-losses-ties) and earned a bye to the second round of the postseason, scheduled to begin Sunday. Koo is also regarded as a candidate for the regular-season MVP award, after posting career highs with 33 homers and 115 RBIs. Source: Yonhap News Agency
