Tokyo: Japanese Foreign Minister H.E. MOTEGI Toshimitsu this evening issued a statement, welcoming the recent signing of the Joint Declaration on border conflict between Cambodia and Thailand in Malaysia.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the statement highlighted that the agreement signifies tangible and steady progress of the ceasefire between Cambodia and Thailand. It expressed Japan’s hope that tensions between the two countries will be eased peacefully through the implementation of this agreement.
H.E. MOTEGI Toshimitsu also conveyed Japan’s deep respect for the diplomatic efforts of the United States of America and Malaysia, the ASEAN Chair, which have played a crucial role in fostering confidence-building between the two nations towards this agreement.
The Japanese Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of improving relations between Cambodia and Thailand for the stability and development of the entire region. In line with this, the Government of Japan, in coordination with relevant countries, will continue efforts to promote de-escalation of the situation. This includes providing equipment through Official Security Assistance (OSA) to Malaysia, which leads ceasefire observer teams, to support the medium- to long-term consolidation of peace.
The historic peace deal was signed by Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Manet, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, and H.E. Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Thailand. The signing ceremony was witnessed by H.E. Donald J. Trump, President of the United States of America, and H.E. Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia and Chair of the 2025 ASEAN Summits, on the sidelines of the 47th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
