International Observers Laud National Election Process in Cambodia

International election observers have praised the National Election process in Cambodia, stressing that voters had shown strong will to support their favorite party without neither threat nor violence.

The appreciation was made by the observers from the International Conference of Asian Political Parties (ICAPP) at a press conference at the Sokha Phnom Penh Hotel this morning.

The process of the 7th general election in 2023 was transparent, fair, free, democratic and non-violent, they stressed.

The ICAPP observers said that they had visited polling stations in the capital and several provinces and noticed that the election took place as scheduled from 7:00 am to 3:00 pm, while the voters, both young and old, waiting to cast their votes at the polling stations with happy faces.

They also spoke highly of the National Election Committee (NEC) which had organised the election in a neutral, transparent and fair manner, with the participation of national and international observers and NGOs.

Safety and security have been ensured while the voter turnout rate is high, up to over 84 percent, they added.

The international observers underlined that Cambodia is strengthening its democracy through elections and respect for the rule of law.

The delegation of observers from the Communist Party of China (CPC) led by H.E. Qian Hongshan, Vice Minister of the International Department of CPC Central Committee, shared the same ideas, saying that the Sunday election was conducted smoothly, fairly and transparently and the turnout rate was high, while the preliminary results showed that the Cambodian people were satisfied with the ruling party.

The 7th legislature National Assembly Election took place on July 23 in 23,789 polling stations throughout the country with the participation of 18 political parties.

According to the NEC’s primary figures, some 8.2 million or 84.58 percent of the total 9.7 million eligible voters went to the Sunday polls.

The preliminary results have been being broadcasted since the night of July 23 on state-run media such as the Agence Kampuchea Presse (AKP), the National Television of Cambodia (TVK), and the National Radio of Cambodia (RNK) as well as on the official social networks of NEC whereas the official ones will be announced between Aug. 9 to Sept. 4.
