SEOUL, South Korean shipbuilding titan HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co. said it is participating in an international defense show in Saudi Arabia in a bid to tap into the local naval vessel market. HD Hyundai Heavy said it is showcasing models of the 3,600-ton frigate ROKS Chungnam, a training ship, a submarine and its shipbuilding technologies at World Defense Show 2024, which kicked off Sunday in Riyadh for a run till Thursday. The 129-meter-long ROKS Chungnam is the first ship built as part of South Korea's frigate acquisition program, code-named FFX Batch-III, under which the nation plans to build a total of six 3,600-ton frigates to replace aging frigates and corvettes. In April last year, HD Hyundai Heavy launched the vessel equipped with such advanced devices as an integrated sensor mast. HD Hyundai Heavy said its participation in the biennial defense show is expected to help the company make forays into Saudi Arabia's market for warships. HD Hyundai Heavy is one of the three subsidiaries of Korea Shipbuilding and Offshore Engineering Co., a subholding company of shipbuilding, oil refining and machinery conglomerate HD Hyundai.
