Phnom penh: The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of Cambodia (MFAIC) has issued a four-point statement in response to the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand’s plan to pursue legal action against Cambodian leaders, stressing that such a move would undermine ongoing ceasefire efforts.
According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, the statement from the MFAIC, dated August 19, expresses deep concern over the comments made by Thailand’s Acting Prime Minister, Phumtham Wechayachai. The Ministry emphasized that the proposed legal actions against Cambodian leaders would not only violate the sovereignty and integrity of Cambodia but also contravene the principles of sovereign equality and mutual respect as outlined in the United Nations Charter. Furthermore, the Ministry highlighted that these actions could severely damage the diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Thailand and jeopardize the progress made towards a lasting ceasefire.
The statement stressed that the intended legal actions would undermine efforts to restore the trust and confidence necessary for implementing the ceasefire agreement reached between Cambodia and Thailand on July 28, 2025. The Ministry also noted the terms and steps towards de-escalation agreed upon and signed at the Extraordinary Meeting of the Cambodia-Thailand General Border Committee (GBC) on August 7, 2025, including the convening of the Regional Border Committees.
MFAIC reiterated the Royal Government of Cambodia’s commitment to working collaboratively with the Royal Thai Government to achieve peace and restore normal relations as soon as possible.
