Cambodia Agrees to Hold GBC Meeting in Malaysia, Proposes Presence of Observers

Phnom penh: The Ministry of National Defence of Cambodia has agreed to Thailand’s request to convene the upcoming extraordinary General Border Committee (GBC) meeting in Malaysia, which the Thai side considers a neutral venue, from Aug. 4 to 7, 2025.

According to Agence Kampuchea Presse, this was confirmed in an official reply letter from H.E. Gen. Tea Seiha, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence of Cambodia, addressed to H.E. Gen. Natthaphon Narkphanit, Acting Minister of Defence of Thailand.

In the same letter, H.E. Gen. Tea Seiha proposed the presence of representatives from Malaysia, the United States of America, and the People’s Republic of China as observers at the upcoming meeting. These three nations played key roles in facilitating the ceasefire agreement between Cambodia and Thailand.

The Cambodian Defence Minister also expressed his sincere appreciation to Malaysia-as the current ASEAN Chair and the leader of the international observer team-for its coordination efforts, as well
as to the United States and China for their pivotal contributions.

The GBC meeting is one of three major outcomes agreed upon by Cambodia and Thailand during their special meeting held in Malaysia on July 28, 2025, aimed at resolving the recent border clashes.
