PUTRAJAYA, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), was awarded the Global Islamic Finance Awards (GIFA) Special Award 2024 for Leadership in Legislative and Institutional Reforms related to Islamic Finance, yesterday. In a statement today, the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister's Department announced that the award was in recognition of Azalina's role and contributions to the arbitration reform agenda, particularly concerning Islamic finance. "The GIFA Awards Committee also considered several other personalities. After careful deliberation and discussion, the committee decided to award this honour to her (Azalina) based on several criteria within the GIFA methodology," read the statement. BHEUU informed that its director-general, Datuk Zamri Misman, had received the award on behalf of Azalina in the Maldives yesterday, as she is currently in France attending the Sulu claims trial. According to BHEUU, GIFA is one of the most prestigious Islamic finance awards in the world, and since its inception, the organisation has recognised several heads of state and government for their support and commitment to Islamic banking and finance through the Global Islamic Finance Leadership Award. Previous recipients of the Global Islamic Finance Leadership Award by GIFA include Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah, former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, and Indonesian President Joko Widodo.
