14 national museums break visitor record in 2023

The country's national museums broke a visitor record last year, with the total admissions surpassing 10 million for the first time, data showed Thursday, breaking the previous record of 9.98 million set in 2019. The National Museum of Korea said the total admissions to the museum and 13 other national museums amounted to 10.47 million, up 17.1 percent from the previous year. "The figure translated into one in every five South Koreans visiting a national museum last year," an official at the museum said. Among the 14 national museums, the National Museum of Korea drew the largest number of visitors with 4.18 million. Gyeongju National Museum came in second with 1.34 million and Daegu National Museum ranked No. 3 with 805,883, driven by "Return of Cheonma" marking the 50th anniversary of the discovery of the Cheonmachong Tomb and "A Collector's Invitation" showing the art collection donated by late Samsung Chairman Lee Kun-hee, respectively.
