Herd of Asian Elephants Spotted in Mondulkiri

A herd of Asian elephants was spotted by villagers during their regular patrol in Keo Seima Wildlife Sanctuary, Mondulkiri province on Jan. 22. The good news was shared instantly by the Mondulkiri Provincial Department of Environment quoted by TVK. The Asian elephant has been listed as an endangered species on the IUCN Red List, and there are only about 2,500 of them in the world. Wild elephants mostly live in the Cardamom Mountains, the northern plateau of the Tonle Sap River, and the eastern highlands in Mondulkiri and Rattanakiri provinces, which are rich in biodiversity and have a favourable slope for the habitat of elephants and other animals. Cambodia has been engaging actively in the conservation of the world's remaining Asian elephants, and the country has adopted the ten-year Asian Elephant Conservation Action Plan for 2020-2029, which will cost about US$40.5 million.
